- 她如何成为 Grace 葡萄庄园的负责人，经营自己的生意感觉如何;
- 在中国零售市场销售葡萄酒的困难之处;
- Grace 自产葡萄酒与“旧世界”和“新世界”葡萄酒之间的异同;
- 根据葡萄庄园所在地的气候(等诸多因素）选择和种植的品种;
- 她的经商原则和理念;
- 她如何倾听客户的声音，如何与之建立联系;

The Drawing Room

Interview with Mrs. Judy Leissner of Grace Vineyard

We were extremely fortunate to have invited Mrs. Judy Leissner, the president of Grace Vineyard, as guest to our inaugural video blog. Unlike what we would expect from someone of her calibre, Judy is charming, fun yet confident, especially when it comes to the future of business.

Having graduated from the University of Michigan and accumulated working experience from Goldman Sachs (Hong Kong), Judy brought with her vast global perspective and is now operating the entire winery – from growing grapes, making and bottling wines, to sales and marketing, as well as overseeing Grace’s overall strategy.

Not only is Grace Vineyard the first family-owned boutique winery in China, it's wines have also won numerous awards and special honors, paving its way as the single Chinese winery with the highest potential to break in major wine markets around the world.

In this casual interview, Judy tells us:

- How she become the director of Grace Vineyard and what it is like running the business;
- The difficulties of selling wine in the Chinese retail market;
- The difference between Chinese wine and imported wine;
- The differences and similarities between Grace's own wine compared to "Old World" and "New World" wine;
- The varietals to be chosen and planted according to the climate (amongst many other factors) where the vineyard is situated;
- Her business principles and philosophies;
- How she listens and connects with customers in China;
- A bit about wine and food pairing; and
- How she positions and prices of their wine in the market.

Here's a toast to Grace's success!

Note: The wines tasted in this episode was kindly sponsored by Hestan Vineyards - a winery in Napa, which like Grace Vineyard is founded by another Hong Kong family.

"Events" Page Modification

We've modified the "Events" page to include 2 types of event promotions. They are:

1. Sponsored Events - Large-scale exhibitions and conferences related to wine; and
2. Member Events - Any smaller tastings or networking events related to wine that is organized by members of 12BOTTLES.

Our user feedback shows that a lot of wine enthusiasts have a difficult time locating wine events around their area. We hope that by including "Member Events", that our members will openly and actively share useful information regarding local wine events.

We would love to hear what your thoughts are on this feature and how we can make continuous improvements to make it as relevant to you as possible.

Why 12?

Simply because there are 12 bottles in a traditional case of 750ml wine (save for, of course, the 6 magnums or 24 half-bottles) and it is always cheaper if you buy them in 12’s! But more importantly, as we grew increasingly fond of wine over the years, we actively tried to find friends (and strangers) to collectively chip-in and buy wine in 12’s (or factors of). Through this extraordinary process, we were able to forged long-lasting friendships with a group of people who all share a similar passion: Wine.

And that is the same experience we want to offer here at 12Bottles - a community where a group of wine enthusiasts can meet and share their wine notes and experiences. Hopefully, through this site, you will meet someone to also share a case of wine with you.

Introducing 12Bottles

Wine consumption in China had risen steadily over the last 2 decades, but it was only within the last 3 to 4 years that we’ve seen a dramatic spike in interest. Fueled by events such as Hong Kong SAR Government’s decision to waive duties on wine, thereby bridging the gap between China and the rest of the world, wine is becoming increasingly popular in the Mainland. And why wouldn’t it be? As our living standards increases, so too have our tendency to try the finer things in life.

But “finer things” must not automatically be associated with “more expensive”. The trend that we’ve noticed is that Chinese tend to only embrace a small group of exclusive Old World vintages. There is so much more to wine than just Lafite, Latour, Haut-Brion, Mouton and Margaux. We want to educate and encourage you to try that New World label and the many different types and varietals that you haven’t tried.

Unfortunately, most of the write-ups we read about on wine are from foreign publications translated into Chinese. We believe that different cultures have different tastes and preferences when it comes to a number of things, not least wine, and especially when it comes to pairing wine with Chinese cuisine. That is what we at 12Bottles are trying to accomplish – a platform dedicated to and for wine lovers. A community where we can all smell, swirl, sip, savour and share.

You are your best critic! So we invite you to explore a little and share with all of us in this space, what you like (or don’t like) about that bottles you’ve just uncorked!

We hope you like what we’ve put together so far. Please stay tuned for more updates!
